Petit Verdot means "small green" as the berries are small and ripen very late, as late as April.
They are a very hardy variety surviving much longer on the vine than other varieties without getting diseased.
As the berries are small they are naturally higher in tannin and acid. With this Petit Verdot, you do not notice the tannins as dominant as they appear on the palate in layers and roll over the tongue exhibiting the different flavours of floral and savoury at different times.
The tiny berries also provide a full-bodied, rich and concentrated wine. It has earthy, allspice, bright cherry and cocoa characters and elegant tannins which are deliciously full and round. This is a young wine that is just opening up that you can enjoy now or cellar for a few years.
The wine pairs well with rich, creamy food such as French cuisine or even roast lamb as it is fatty. The acid cuts through the fat in the food.
This wine is on the wine menu at the famous Appellation Restaurant and has been paired with duck in one of their degustation menus.
